Modern power distribution systems for ships must stringently comply with the special nature of the demands in shipbuilding because of the high power densities involved. The multitude of energy consumers on a ship – in particular the so-called important power consumers – require a reliable – supply of energy, and accordingly, high-performance products. We have tackled these challenges. The result is the latest switchgear products with shipping classification approvals and solutions for enhanced ships safety.
International suppliers of power distribution solutions on ships, as well as shipyards, trust our switchgear. The long-standing co-operation has allowed their demands to be directly considered with our product developments. Shipowners are aware of the reliability of our components for this reason.
Our circuit-breakers fulfil the demands for high switching capacities. Accordingly, the compact circuit-breaker NZM, and also the accessory range are optimally matched for shipping requirements, whether it is because of the simple replacement using the plug-in units or because of the comprehensive diagnostic functions. All the important information can be compiled, displayed on site, and transferred to higher-level systems.
Outgoers for consumer connections are provided by the motor and system protection circuitbreaker PKZ 2 featuring different, plug-in control options ensuring flexibility in the shipbuilding sector. Particularly suitable for power distribution applications in cabins are the miniature circuitbreaker range FAZ featuring the approved devices for shipping companies and shipyards.
The arc-fault protection system ARCON provides reliable protection for the safety of shipping at sea. ARCON acts to quench arc faults before they have the opportunity to permanently damage the ships power distribution system, thus assuring that ship operations can continue without any noticeable interruption.
Auxiliary drives are important units for ship operation in addition to the main drive and propulsion systems. These include deck machinery(winches and cranes), manoeuvring drives and other drive systems required for ship based equipment. These drives are mainly switched and controlled on a distributed basis. The high quality of the components used is a fundamental requirement for minimal downtimes and system longevity.
Control of auxiliary drives is subject to stringent safety demands. Our switchgear has been tried and tested for many years in maritime applications. For example, the contactor DILM has been developed especially for switching higher currents. This contactors feature electronically controlled actuator systems and are equipped for currents above 580 A with vacuum technology. Accordingly, propulsion units for the bow thrusters (tunnel thrusters) or winch drives can be switched with currents of up to 2,200 A.
A further tried-and-tested field of application for our products on deck is in hoisting systems. The compact PLC PS4 is ideally suited for the control of hoist drives. Additional modules are used for position recognition and speed detection of crane jibs.
Everywhere that drives are manually controlled our cam switch T or switch-disconnector P deliver high levels of performance. Whether for installation in control panels or as switches in enclosures for use on deck, quality and reliability speaks for itself.
From modular PLCs to control relays and control circuit devices, we supply a comprehensive range of products for reliably networked marine and offshore automation solutions.
- Programmable controllers: PLCs and control relays
- Touch panels and HMI-PLCs
- Control circuit devices
Most processes on a ship are highly automated in order to increase the cost-effectiveness, reliability and safety of ship operations – and the degree of automation is steadily increasing. Large quantities of freight and cargo require transportation with as few personnel as possible. Or passengers on a cruise liner demand the highest levels of comfort and exclusivity when sailing the oceans of the world. All this is possible thanks to modern automation engineering.
The speed and propeller pitch of modern propulsion systems are controlled via the main engine control system remote operator. In order to ensure that the operation is possible from different points on the ship, the communication between different helmstand control systems with one another must be guaranteed.
Our compact PLC PS4 has stands out on a day-to-day basis for different manoeuvres on hundreds of ships. The control systems are located for example on the bridge or on the sides in the wings of a navigating bridge. Communication is undertaken with the central control station on the bridge or in the control station. The networking defines the priorities of the individual operating points and controls the overall communication to ensure that only a single person can be in control of the ship at any time.
Furthermore, our controls are used in the stabiliser systems. These anti-heeling compensation systems are used to compensate for the list (inclination) when the ship is loaded. Water is pumped into the ballast tanks on the opposite side of the ship to compensate for the weight of the load. Our controls process the incoming signals from the list (inclination measurement) sensors. The pumps and valves are controlled to compensate for the list. This is performed by networking with the bridge, the engine room and the cargo area.
Preventative maintenance helps to reduce the risk of a component malfunction on the high seas. However, during operation at sea it is still possible that the function of a component is no longer guaranteed. To ensure replacement, the corresponding spare part component must be available or procured at the next port of call.
Our After Sales Service offers a wide range of services for this area. The service deployments do not just cover components such as switchgear, PLC’s, motor starters as well as control circuit devices, but also customised system solutions and power distribution systems.
The After Sales Service provides quick and competent emergency assistance when machines or systems are at a standstill. This includes the world-wide procurement of replacement parts or a telephone consultation service for analysis of malfunctions.
Furthermore, our After Sales Service is the ideal partner for tailor-made service, maintenance, and consultation contracts that provide both reliability and flexibility. And this – 24 hours a day, 7 days a week:
